Hornless Hereford bull. The Hereford, a beef cattle breed of the domestic cow (Bos taurus), originated in Herefordshire, England, in 1742. The hornless Hereford breed is known as the Polled Hereford, polled being a term used to refer to a lack of horns or removal of horns. This breed has the polled gene, a natural genetic mutation that results in a lack of horns. The breed was produced by selective breeding in 1889.
