The American loss was eightkilled and twenty-five wounded. Houston worked earnestly for the annexationof Texas to the United States, and after it was accomplished was elected UnitedStates Senator. In 1859 ne was elected governor of Texas, but, being opposedto secession, he resigned his office when that State went out of the Union, andretired to private life.
