IVF treatment. Scientist (in background) using a light microscope and micro-needle to inject human sperm into a human egg cell. The procedure is being watched on a screen at right. This technique used for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The injected sperm fertilises the egg. The resulting zygote is then grown in the lab until it reaches an early stage of embryonic development. It is then implanted in a patient's uterus. Photographed at the Marques Institute, Barcelona, Spain. The Institute is the first in Europe to offer embryo adoption, where the embryos implanted into a woman's uterus are not biologically linked to her or her partner.
