It became the centerwhere resolutions were formed, and measures adopted, whichwere quickly responded to throughout New England and thenation and terminated in the establishment of Americanindependence. As the town grew in size the hall was foundinadequate to hold the large gatherings at the public meetings,and in 1805 the building was enlarged with a more spacioushall as the result. At one end of it is a portrait of Washinp-tonby Stuart, another of Peter Faneuil by Sargent, and the greatpainting by Healy of Webster replying to Playne in hismemorable speech in 1830 in the United States Senate. f,i 125
