The Nature of the Sun. Initial page of an article by the astronomer William Herschel (1738-1822), titled Observations Tending to Investigate the Nature of the , and published in London in 1801 in volume 91 of Philosophical Transactions, the journal of the Royal Society. Herschel had achieved fame in 1781 when he discovered Uranus. This paper was read to the Royal Society on 16 April 1801, and is notable for introducing the idea that the Sun's brightness might vary and affect the climate on Earth. Herschel also correctly pointed out that the Sun's activity, measured in terms of sunspots, influences the Earth's climate. The paper included Herschel's drawings of sunspots, see V700/165 and V700/166.
