Red carpenter ant. Macrophotograph of a red carpenter ant (Camponotus chromaiodes). This carpenter ant builds a nest in damp wood. It is found in wooded areas of North America, feeding on plant and fruit juices, insects and other small invertebrates. Colonies of these ants may cause severe structural damage to wooden houses. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other insect species.
