The examples on this plate are medical talismans, intended to protect against specific diseases. The magical figures drawn on the obverse and reverse are little more than sigils and crude Greek or Latin magical words. From Iohann Huser, Archidoxis Magicae , 1590, which is based on the writings of Paracelsus. From top, reading left to right. The obverse and reverse of the magical square talisman against palsy; against stone in the loins, and one spell (in sigillic form) and one talisman (in the shape of a fork), both designed against loss of virility. The first spell is a specific against natural loss, the talismanic fork against loss brought about by witchcraft, or other diabolical arts. The collection of sigils in the bottom register are to be written on various parts of the horses bridle, and on lamens attached to the bridle, to ensure that horse will have a long life.
