In every inhabited part of the world we find abundant evidence of occu-pation by more than one race of people. In many cases, there has been a seriesof occupants, each passing through a cycle of settlement, growth and matur-ity, followed by a gradual decay, a migration or an absorption into tlic hotlyof some more powerful race. Everywhere in Greene county, as well as throughout the State of Missouri,we find e\-i(lcnces of prehistoric dwellers. The earliest instances of such, inthe section now known as Greene count}, exist, probably, in some of thecaves of this region. That a race of people called Cave Dwellers once in-habited parts of the Ozarks is undisputed by archaeologists, and that theyantedated another race known as Mound Builders, is also very generallybelieved.
