Bradford city centre, Yorkshire, England, bedecked with flags and bunting to celebrate the Coronation of the British monarch, King George VI, on 12 May 1937

A street in Bradford city centre, Yorkshire, England, bedecked with flags and bunting to celebrate the Coronation of the British monarch, King George VI, on 12 May 1937. Alongside the flag of the United Kingdom, the Union Jack or Union Flag, are the flags of other British Empire nations. On the right of the image is a trolleybus (a bus powered electrically by overhead wires), typical of 1930s public transport in British cities, and the image also includes a range of 1930s motor vehicles. King George VI, father of the present British Queen, Elizabeth II, succeeded to the throne in 1936 on the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Edward married Wallis Simpson and the couple were subsequently titled Duke and Duchess of Windsor. This photograph was taken by a Yorkshire married couple, George and Kathleen Blenkhorn, and comes from a Blenkhorn family album.
