Allen & Ginter Naval Flags

Allen and Ginter was the Richmond, Virginia, tobacco manufacturing firm formed by John Allen and Lewis Ginter in 1865. The firm created and marketed the first cigarette cards for collecting and trading. This 1888 set was of naval flags of the world. An heroic image of the United States Frigate "Chicago" slicing through the surf takes center stage of this gorgeous poster compiling images of all fifty cards from this tobacco set. Many of the cards feature portraits of admirals along with the flags, or images of the ships at sea. Geo. Harris & Sons is identified as the lithographer at lower right.
