The elevator is provided withan independent automatic stop, connected to the operatingvalve and arranged to stop the car at the top and bottom land- power pump, which is direct driven by a Diehl direct-currentmotor through a Reynolds silent-chain for silent and smoothoperation. The pump has pistons 5 ins. in diameter, withan 8-in. stroke, and is fitted with a by-pass to prevent the pres-sure exceeding the maximum of the pressure tank. A pressureregulator is used in connection with the motor drive, whichautomatically starts and stops the motor as the pressure in thepressure tank falls or rises, the motor thus running only whenwater is required for operation. The pressure can be reducedby properly setting the regulator, and the current used in themotor will thus be in accordance with the load lifted. The pressure tank is a long horizontal tank provided for acapacity of 1500 gallons. Its heads are dished out to the radius. The elevator will be provided with two counterweights placedat the sides of the hatchway and equal in weight to that of thecar and part of the plunger, so as to require the minimumpower for operation. Each counterweight will weigh about8000 lbs. and will be connected to the car by means of four5^-in. cables, arranged so as to equally take the weight of thecounterweight. A locking device for holding the car stationary will be placedon the underneath side of the platform, operated by a lever onthe platform, and so arranged that this device cannot he oper-ated until the car gets to the upper level; it will then be re-leased by an incline at the side of the hatchway, and can thenbe operat
