A late 19th Century illustration of The Temple of Heaven, an imperial complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing aka Peking. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for a good harvest. Chinese temples were used as place of worship where people revere ethnic Chinese gods and ancestors.
