A considerable part of the goods trafficis worked by six-coupled four-cylinder compound 64 FRENCH RAILWAYS engines with a leading bogie and wheels of moderatediameter (4-6-0), which are also used for passengertrains. Several of the railways have adopted goodsengines with much the same boilers as the biggestexpress engines, running on ten wheels, eight ofwhich are coupled (2-8-0). The four-cylindercompound system is employed in these 4-6-0 FOTJR-CYLDTDBR COMPOUND ENGLNB (eST). but the low-pressure cylinders are outside theframes and the high-pressure inside, which is theopposite of the arrangement in the express andmixed traffic engines. These engines weigh over70 tons ; they are not, however, quite the largestgoods engines in France, several companies havingsome yet bigger machines. The first place is FRENCH RAILWAYS 65 occupied by some tank engines, employed by theNord for working their share of the heavy trafficfrom the northern coalfields. These engines arealso four-cylinder compounds, but their design isquite different from the type of four-cylindercompound usual in France. They run on sixteenwheels arranged in two eight-wheel bogies, eachof which have six wheels coupled together. Twohigh-pressure cylinders drive the six-coupledwheels of the rear bogie and two low-pressurecylinders those of the front bogie. The highpressure and low pressure cylinders are arrangedback to back.
