Both doorwayshave a great enclosing outer archway, and while Elgin is a pointedarch, that at Aberdeen is round headed, but at the time when thewhole front of St Machars was built, round and pointed arches wereused in Scotland quite frequently and indiscriminately, especially indoorways. What may be called the infilling at Elgin—built at thesame time as the whole doorway at Aberdeen—is the feature where thetwo designs resemble each other, the latter being, as it were, the firstrude sketch of the design—to suit the granite—and Elgin the finishedand refined completion.
