Belgian artillery constructed a screen using hop poles, barbed wire, and sandbags in the Dixmude-Pervyse sector in 1917. The purpose of such screens was to protect batteries from low angle observation, forcing the enemy to rely on aerial observation or triangulation. These screens were highly effective and easy to construct.
