Thompson, ]>rofessor of market gar- dening at the Massachusetts Agricul- tural College, Amherst, and also in charge of the Lexington experimental market garden field station. Mr. Thompson, who is an able speaker, told of the work being done at Lexington and discussed many market garden problems. He favored more practical training for college students and said the aim of all agricultural and horticul- tural students should be to get real, [)ractical, as well as scientific, ideas. Vegetables must play a bigger part as our country grows, said lie, as vege- tables contiiin the necessary vitamiues and more of them can be i)roduced pt'r acre than any other crop. He went on to say that at the Lexington field sta tion special studies were l)eing made of eggj)lant disease, which it had been found persisted in the soil for eight years, and that carrot, cucumber and other diseases were jilso be- ing earnestly studied; also sucli pests as red spider, the scjuasli borer, etc., as well as breeding cucumbers for high production. He said that in studying asparagus yiehis, all the stalks from 1,0(10 selected Martha Washington {ilants had been carefully weighed and graded, and specially fine plants se- lected and removed, to see if produc- tion would prove inherent.
