The abbey is situated in the north quarter of the city,in a nearly oblong area Ijounded on the north and west bystreets, and on the east and south b}^ broad rows of housesand gardens. The axis of this site lies north-west andsouth-east, but the church stands more nearly east andwest, and we shall see presently that the variation of thetwo axes
