The four lumbrical muscles attach to other tendons or connective tissue, rather than direct to bone. The first two (index and middle finger) have a single point of origin, while the last two (ring and little finger) have two points of origin. All originate from flexor tendons in the region of the corresponding metacarpal bones, and attach to extensor expansions on the first (proximal) phalanges of the fingers. These muscles flex the proximal knuckles and extend the outer two.
