Joseph Lakanal (1762-1845). 1868 illustration of the French philosopher and politician Joseph Lakanal. Lakanal is best known as an educational reformist and was an original member of the Institut de France. He eventually moved to the US, where he became president of the University of Louisiana, now Tulane University, which he reorganised with the support of local masonic lodges.
