The historic Shrove Tuesday race, which started in 1445, is open to women over 18 who have lived in the picturesque town for more than three months. The contestants raced 415 yards from Olney Markey Place to the Parish Church and had to flip their pancakes at the start and again as they crossed the finishing line. The traditional race is believed to have started after a townswoman was late for the Shriving service at the Olney Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul.
