Abbey Dore Court Garden is in glorious Herefordshire and is a beautiful, mature, six acre, plant-lovers’ garden developed by Charis Ward. It has formal, wild and river areas and just over the river bridge is a further four acre meadow full of unusual trees. Abbey Dore Court Garden is located at the Southern end of what is known as the Golden Valley in South Herefordshire 15 miles from Hay-on-Wye and 12 miles from Hereford. Nearby is the famous 1147 Cistercian Abbey. Entering, the visitor is confronted by a new area with bamboos, trees and shrubs and several borders add colour and interest. There are nine individual borders in the Walled Garden divided by brick paths where now only bulbs mark where the orchard once was. There are wirework arches leading to a sculpture with water. Two long borders, planted purple, gold, bluey green and silver take you to the River Dore and a wild garden full of trees, shrubs and bulbs. The visitor can pass over the river via a metal arched bridge and discover a 4 acre arboretum of young and unusual trees and a seat under two large sequoias. There are seats throughout the garden where visitors can enjoy the peace of the garden. Alongside is a small nursery specialising in herbaceous perennials. Open to the public since 1976, it is the work of Charis Ward with considerable help from family members through the years.
