During the LGBT pride celebrations in Manchester's Sackville Gardens, 29th August, 2022, the UK's first National Trans Memorial, or transgender memorial, a specially carved Sycamore tree dedicated to remembering transgender individuals who have passed away, providing a place for their memory to be cherished, was tragically set on fire. The tree was damaged beyond saving. The Consortium for LGBT+ communities consulted on its replacement inviting designs to be submitted by 30th May 2023. The tree was unveiled in 2013, as this plaque notes.
