1st American fifty-mile automobile race. Andrew L Riker (1868-1930), automobile designer, crossing the finishing line of the first American fifty-mile automobile race, held in Springfield Long Island, New York, USA, in April 1900. Riker was competing in one of his electric carriages, and won the race with a time of two hours, three minutes and thirty seconds. Riker's was the only electric vehicle in the race, and because of the sixty cell batteries was by far the heaviest.
