The original Kendal Castle - a Motte and Baily castle which was built after the Norman Conquest, either in 1087AD by Ivo Taillebois (a Norman noble), or post 1100AD by a noble named Ketel. The fortification consisted or a circular motte 11m high with 48m base, and a curved bailey following the ridge edge above Kendal. These would have been topped by wooden stockades and buildings, and stood until it was abandoned in the 11th Century by the de Lancaster's. A replacement was eventually constructed on the other side of the town, but not until the 12th Century.
