Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), American educator, suffragette, and civil rights activist. Bethune founded and presided over many associations for the advancement of Black people, and was adviser to president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Here she is shown with girls from a school she founded in 1904, called Daytona Normal and Industrial School for Negro Girls. Photo from 1905.
