Berlin, Arena Halle, building detail. Klincker brick detail of old bus depot building (now used as events venue). Arena halle was built by the public transport company, Allgemeine Berliner Omnibus AG (ABOAG), as a depot for 240 buses (designed by architect Franz Ahrens). Ahrens’ 6500 square meter hall had natural roof lightning and great attention was paid to details such us the clincker brick sculptures by sculptor Arminius Hasemann. It was completed in 1927 and a year later the ABOAG became the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the company that is still in charge of Berlin’s inner city public transport. The hall was used as an amoury during the third Reich period and then as a refugee camp after the war. The monumental building was again used as a bus depot until it was acquired bythe Art Kombinat in the 1990s with the intention of organising cultural events at the former depot. In 2000 the Arena Berlin was extensively refurbished and is now a popular for events such as concerts, trade fairs, conventions, fashion shows and parties.
