Challenger 4, operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust, taking part in the parade of sail, during the Tall Ships Festival.

Challenger 4 was Designed by world renowned designer Rob was built in 2000 and raced around the world. She is perfect for sail training as she provides an exciting but extremely safe environment for everyone onboard. Challenger 4 has good speed and acceleration under sail , a large saloon and galley area with a comfortable ‘open style’ sleeping area. Tall Ships Youth Trust is a sail training organisation in the United Kingdom that currently owns and operatesfour 22m/72 ft Challenger class racing yachts. The four Challenger yachts usually sail together to provide inter-class racing, whereas Stavros S Niarchos generally makes longer voyages, along with appearing at Tall Ship events around the world. The Challenger yachts, being of smaller capacity (18 berths each), provide a more flexible approach to sail training, allowing TSYT to scale the amount of sailings relative to demand ( not all yachts need to sail). A ship of Stavros S Niarchos's class is limited in that it will always sail, regardless of how many of its paid-for berths are in use on that particular voyage. The Challenger yachts were part of a 12 strong fleet of Challenge 72's built and used in the 2000/1 and 2004/5 BT Global Challenge. The purchase of the craft provides TSYT with four stable, reliable and extremely well tested craft to base a sail training program upon. The Global Challenge was a round the world yacht race run by Challenge Business, the company started by Sir Chay Blyth in 1989. It was held every four years, and took a fleet of one-design (or matching) steel yachts, crewed by ordinary men and women who have paid to take part, round Cape Horn and through the Southern Ocean where winds can reach 70 kn (130 km/h). The fee for the last race proposed (in 2008) was £28,750. It was unique in that the race took the westabout route around the world against prevailing winds and currents often referred to as the ‘wrong way’ round.
