Red laser light alignment prior to electron beam radiotherapy for the treatment of a retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the retina of the eye that occurs in infants. The laser is used to accurately position the infant's head which is immobilised in a plastic cast. Such accurate positioning allows the electron beam to be focussed directly onto the tumour from the metal tube at left. Previously, less sophisticated attempts at using radiotherapy in treating retinoblastomas had often resulted in blindness, due to the lens of the eye being affected by radiation.
