Red Squirrel in YORKSHIRE A CUTE squirrel was caught admiring its reflection, just like the Greek fable about Narcissus, who fell in love with his image reflected in the water. Images show how the vain critter could not resist hanging around the still waters of Hawes, North Yorkshire, in the hopes of catching a glimpse of its whiskers and bushy red tail. Red squirrels are the UK?s native species and have lived here for around 10,000 years. They are now limited to certain areas of the country, such as Anglesey, parts of northern England and Scotland. In many cases, they have retreated to wilder, remote locations. From six to ten feet away, 52-year-old wildlife photographer Julie Smith captured these images using a Sony A7R4 camera with a Sony 200-600mm lens and a gimbal head for stability. ?I was sitting in a hide watching a family of red squirrels coming and going to the water to drink in between gathering nuts,? she said. ?Being in a hide allows you to watch them without disturbing them. It was a still day, so the water made a great reflective surface. ?This is an area of North Yorkshire that has been very successful in red squirrel conservation, and a new and growing population of red squirrels has been established ENDS
