During the construction phase of the Channel Tunnel project, the client Eurotunnel employed a team of skilled engineers to regularly monitor the progress of the works carried out by the consortium of ten contractors. Here, an engineer sits on top of a huge boring machine in a marine tunnel, writing notes which will later form his daily report. The red beam of the TBM's laser guidance system can be seen at his feet, using sophisticated satellite technology to keep the huge machine precisely on course. The Channel Tunnel was the greatest construction project of the 20th century and is considered to be one of the wonders of the modern world. It opened for business in 1994.
