School children, Senegal. Children lining up outside a local school in Senegal. Since the construction of the Great Green Wall, more farmers have been able to stay in the area during the dry season, meaning that it is easier for their children to go to school. The Great Green Wall is a project developed by the African Union that aims to plant a wall of trees across Africa from Djibouti to Senegal, along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, in order to help prevent further desertification. Where it has been constructed it has improved local life, helping the fight against disease and poverty.
