James started doing Reserve Officers Training Corps at Oklahoma State University in 1959 which is around the same time there was a draft to go to Vietnam. James then decided he should enter the Air Force as an officer in November of 1963, after four years of ROTC. He devoted more than two decades of his life growing through the officer ranks as an Air Force pilot until he ultimately received the rank of Colonel. To James, the highlights of his Air Force career were being able to fly some of the best fighter aircraft and also being able to work all over the world. After a few years of piloting T-37s, T-38s and F-101Bs, James then moved on to F-4s, F-16s and A-10s. Being a pilot, James was able to travel for duty at many duty locations he was stationed at. He was assigned to eight different duty stations, half of them were bases located outside of the United States, including Incirlik Air Base, Turkey and Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. His last base was England Air Force Base, Louisiana, where James retired in April of 1990, after 26 years of service. ( Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Andrew Lee)
