Neurolab off-axis rotator. Canadian astronaut Dafydd R. Williams prepares for a run in the Neurolab off-axis rotator on board space shuttle Columbia during mission STS-90 (17th April - 3rd May 1998). Assisting him is US astronaut James A. Pawelczyk (at right). The rotator device was developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) to simulate the vestibular system (balance system) with both spinning and tilting sensations. Infrared video cameras capture the eye movements that accompany the spinning. Eye movements will reflect changes in how the vestibular system responds. Photographed on 19th April 1998.
