Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita) Tamri Morocco
The NORTHERN BALD IBIS is a threatened species due to its low world population. Apart from a few pairs in Syria, the only wild populations now exist in coastal Morocco close to the resort of Agadir. There is a semi-wild population close to the town of Birecik in eastern Turkey that is allowed to breed naturally on local cliff sites, but is taken into captivity during the non-breeding season to prevent the birds migrating and falling victim to hunters. The total truly wild population is estimated to be in the region of 300 birds, 95% of the world's truly wild population concentrated at the coastal sites in Morocco. Historically, Northern Bald Ibis was once more widespread and the reasons for the historical decline are not known. Today, the causes of decline are believed to include disturbance, hunting and pesticides. In Morocco, they breed on coastal cliffs and rocky escarpments in arid remote areas.
