So far. the new tie has shown verj goodresults and has left nothing to be desired in the way ofstability. It is with difficulty that, when a train passes, the slightest movement of the ties can be noticed, so wellare they anchored in the ballast. On the other hand, ifone can judge, the cost of maintenance appears to be muchbelow that of ordinary track upon wooden tics. It will, however, be possible to decide definitely uponthis only after a much longer experience. The company operating the Netherlands State railroadsdeserves a great deal of credit for its resolution to solvethe important problem of metallic sub-structure; effortswhich have already much advanced our knowledge onthis question. Special credit is due to M. Post, Engineerof the lines, and we propose to follow them very closely, in orderthat we may be able finally to complete the present noticeby an announcement of the results obtained. It remains that we should state the work whichthese different sections of road have to do, and indicatethe cost of the track on the Post modified plan. Thanksto the kindness of M. Post, the Engineer, we have ascer-tained that the total number of trains passing daily fromTilbourg to Breda is 22, of which 14 are passenger and 8freight trains. The maximum speed is that of the mailtrain, which may be estimated at 75 kilometers (46,^ miles)an hour. As to the weight of the heaviest train, it is about978 tons, or, perhaps, with the engine and tender, i ,046 tons. The cost of the track upon metallic ties of the modifiedPost type is about as follows, the weights given being inkilogrammes; Material for meters of track.
