A 1908 photograph of Hornsby's 1st Chain Track Tractor or Caterpillar Engine, forerunner of the modern army tank. Richard Hornsby & Sons was an engine and machinery manufacturer in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England from 1828 to 1918. The company was a pioneer in the manufacture of the oil engine. In WWI, the tractors were used to tow heavy artillery but not for actual combat.
