Carnival in Cologne, Germany

It is a local carnival tradition in Cologne that a trio consisting of a "virgin" (a man in drag), a prince and a farmer are appointed to officially lead festivities during the carnival season each year. They appear at carnival balls and the main parades to fire up the crowds. The German word for the trio is "Dreigestirn", consisting of Jungfrau, Prinz and Bauer. German carnival is at its most boisterous in Cologne, whose residents are generally considered to be carnival fanatics.
