CHAPTEE I. AS the peculiar characteristic observable in the churches of the Charente district towhich Mr. Sharpe introduced the Architectural Association is that of their domicalstructure, evidently derived from a Byzantine source, a short discussion of their originand general character is a proper preliminary step to their description, and we shallin this follow chiefly Mr. Sharpes own remarks, given in the Lecture Rooms in CastleStreet, June loth, 1876, when he described to a large audience the results of theexcursion. The other sources of information to which we have access are, firstly,M. Felix Verneilhs beautiful work on Saint Front de Perigueux, and the domicalchurches of Aquitaine, LArchitecture Byzantine en France (1851): secondly, Statistique Monumentale de la Charente, by the Abbe Michon, 184
