Influenza A virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of influenza A virus particles (red), cause of influenza. The particle is spherical and consists of a lipoprotein envelope containing the genetic material ribonucleic acid (RNA) in combination with protein. Surface proteins protruding from the lipid envelope give the particle a spiked appearance. Influenza A is a highly contagious orthomyxovirus that affects the respiratory system. It is transmitted by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include headache, fever and weakness. Secondary lung infections may occur. Magnification: x62,500 at 6x6cm size.
