It was left to the volunteers, themselves, to decide in what order theywould set out for the purpose of gaining this information, and, after a briefdiscussion, they divided themselves into two squads, marching into the gloomof the coming night, past the outposts, directly toward where it was knownthe enemy were halted. Five—ten minutes of cautious advance, and then the sounds of horseshoofs upon the plank road caused them to crouch amid the underbrush. Not. The Scouts. than twenty yardsaway did the newcomershalt, and then it was as if thescouts were in the center ofthe Confederate army, formed in a circle, and every man shooting toward them. They had found that for which they sought, and. as one of them writes,they discovered a little too much just at that moment. The fusilade of musketry ceased almost as soon as it had begun, and thenthese volunteers from the 74th, realizing that while they might have anindefinite idea of the enemys location, they had not yet accomijlished thatfor which they came, pressed forward once more.
