Inthe latter case, as no distinction is preserved as to the direc-tion in which the wheels revolve, it becomes necessary to havefour circuits, oue for each cardinal point, with a recorder ineach, and to have one connected with each arm of the cross. A working model of the instrument above described wasexhibited at the Meeting, and was fitted with an electricalarrangement such as I have mentioned. I have since discovered that the slits, sliders, and bar abovedescribed may be replaced by a train of cogged wheels. (Fig. 4represents the upper, and fig. 5 the under surface of the train.
