The small fishing town of Makarov on Russia's Sakhalin Island.

The Russian town of Makarov, on the eastern edge of Sakhalin Island, was once home to a thriving paper industry but now relies on fishing and employment in the oil and gas industry to survive. The fishing industry is endangered, as numbers of the Sakhalin Salmon are decreasing. A Royal Dutch Shell-led consortium is building the world's largest oil and gas development nearby.
