Golden carpenter ant. Close-up of the head of a golden carpenter ant (Camponotus sericeiventris), showing its jaws (mandibles, lower right) and one of its eyes (upper centre). Carpenter ants (Camponotus sp.) are large ants that are indigenous to many parts of the world. They prefer dead, damp wood in which to build nests. C. sericeiventris is found in Central and South America, where it ranges from Mexico to Argentina.
