Cyclopedia of locomotive engineering, with examination questions and answers; a practical manual on the construction care and management of modern locomotives . of locomotive wheels being imperfectand unreliable, this apparatus has been designed withthe view of obviating that difficulty and of greatlyincreasing the adhesive and tractive power of locomo-tive engines. This is effected by means of a combinedjet of steam and sand projected to the point of contactbetween the driving wheels and the advantages of the apparatus are: 1. The certainty of delivering sand at the properpoint between the wheels and rails. 2. Saving in sand by being able to regulate thequantity delivered according to existing necessities. 3. Dispensing with rods and levers for working sandgear. 4. Capability of being applied to present sand boxeswithout any alteration. 5. Simultaneous delivery of sand at the point ofcontact for both wheels, whereby the liability to injurethe crank, driving axles and coupling rods is greatlyreduced. 6. Additional train resistance avoided, as no super-fluous sand is left on the rails as by the old method. 4i8 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERINGI. INJECTORS, STEAM GAUGES, ETC. 4ts S aooW H a OF © WO oo
