This circa 1921 young man is using his crude, early 20th-century prosthetic arm to make a living for himself. In place of his left arm, he has a very crude, jointed leather club which is useful only for hitting or pushing things. World War I devastated millions of soldiers and families. The caption found with this vintage photograph says, "Germany is trying to rebuild her cripples. The war exacted a heavy toll from this young man, who is doing his best in the carpenter shop in spite of this handicap." To see my other medically-related images, Search: Prestor vintage medical
