The British or European Otter, (Lutra Lutra). British Otter, making a come back. In the early 1960s they were on the verge of extinction, Secretive animals, they can be found in undisturbed rivers, streams and estuaries. Hunted near to extinction in the early 1960s, the otter now enjoys full legal protection, cleaner rivers and managed habitat. The otters distribution will always be limited by the availability of fish. KEY FACTS. Origin: Native. Size: Head/body length: 60-120cm; Tail 40 -45cm. Young: 2-3, can be up to 6. Gestation: 61-74 days. Lifespan: 9-10 years.
