Analysisof the South African material and work by Matsumoto (1959) seem to suggestthe latter. In his examination of S. chicoense, Matsumoto (1959) was able torecognize three morphological variants, forma a, j3 and y, which, by traditionalsystematic procedure, would probably qualify for separate specific rank.
