The wonderful panorama of lakeand mountain is spread for yourdelectation during the greater part ofthe railroad journey along the southshore—pictures with an ever-chang-ing foreground of glittering waterbacked by the immutable hills, uponwhose broad shoulders the slow-mov-ing clouds cast their mantle ofshadow. Presently the road bends sharp tothe south and clinging tightly to abold spur of Mt. Major takes the onlycourse that permits its passage downthe shores of Merrymeeting bay tothe steamboat landing at Alton we find a hotel, and cottagesalmos
