He was graduated at Harvard in 1732; hisbrother Lewis in 1728, and William in 1733. It was the last-named brother who protested by proxy against the ordination ofRev. James Freeman (grandfather of James Freeman Clarke)in Kings Chapel in 1785, and also against the change in theliturgy from the Episcopal to the Unitarian rite. His youngestson, Nathaniel, became a captain in the British navy. There werefour other Vassalls graduated at Harvard, one of whom was theson of the Colonel Vassall buried in this tomb.
