An exhibition of works by American artists of the present day is manifestlyincomplete without a full represe?itation of those residing temporarily in obtain this involves so much expense and trouble, that the attempt has nothitherto been made anywhere on an adequate scale. Last year, however, the Academy took the first important step in this directionby bringing over from Paris a number of paintings selected by a committee ofAmerican artists residing there; and the great interest manifested in the collec-tion thus obtained has impelled the directors to attempt a more comprehensiveone for
